My Other Roles

Various Roles

A list of some of the various roles I perform in the public eye.

Professor of Practice

Baker School of Business, The Citadel

Although I have been an adjunct professor at three universities since 2005, I joined The Citadel ( https://www.citadel.edu/business/ ) full-time in 2021. Depending on the semester, I teach Personal Finance, Corporate Finance, Financial Accounting and/or, no surprise, some of our investment courses. I also lead our career advising program for cadets interested in internships or permanent roles in finance. Last, I am the faculty advisor to our Student Managed Investment Fund which manages over $1 million for The Citadel Foundation. Frankly, my greatest victory as a “teacher” is when I help a student land a sweet job. Please see me if you would like to add a disciplined “soldier” (although the majority of our cadets do not serve in the military after graduation) to your finance or investments “army.”

TV Contributor

CNBC, Yahoo! Finance and more!

I first appeared on TV to “talk tech” in 1995. I remember it clearly. CNBC had to break away because President Clinton was holding a press conference. During the Dotcom Bubble when I was managing over $7 billion in tech mutual funds for Merrill Lynch Investment Managers (now a part of BlackRock), I was in hot demand by all the business news networks as were some other investors at marquee firms with big microphones who covered those stocks. Almost 30 years later, I am still on air about once a week to talk about the same thing. Of course, I rarely appear in studio anymore because the networks and their viewers have been cool with guests appearing remotely ever since COVID. If you see me on the tube these days, I am probably in my home studio or at one at The Citadel.

Although it is difficult to capture all my content because sometimes my appearances come fast and furious when news is breaking, and sometimes my articles and video clips are only available to paid subscribers, I (actually someone who I have hired) try to add as much of my material as possible to this site. So, stay tuned right here.

Investment Writer

These days if you are on TV you are probably also publishing or at least blogging. I write investment commentary for various publications. I also pen business articles for the Charleston Mercury (https://www.charlestonmercury.com/), which is my hometown paper, and I publish reviews on tech companies for Capital Markets Laboratories ( https://www.cmlviz.com/home ). My parents would be pleased to learn that I am at least leveraging some of my eight years of very expensive liberal arts education. Although it is difficult to capture all my content because sometimes my appearances come fast and furious when news is breaking, and sometimes my articles and video clips are only available to paid subscribers, I (actually someone who I have hired) try to add as much of my material as possible to this site. So, stay tuned right here.

Historian

Although I was a history major in college, and I continue to study it, “historian” may be a stretch. That sounds so formal and like you are a real expert. I am not. I am just really into it. Although everyone knows that I love to hear myself talk so they shouldn’t be surprised, my friends and family still tease me because on weekends I often give historical tours of downtown Charleston. I am a licensed guide. I used to work for a company for which I gave tours while driving a carriage with two mules and 16 tourists, but now I just do walking tours. We all get more exercise and since I was never an equestrian, I really sucked at driving mules and horses. Actually, they drove me. When I retire from The Citadel, I plan to teach history to kids. Today, I teach more boring college finance and accounting just to help pay the bills.

Speaker

For years, I have spoken at events for my affiliated companies and for other organizations. If you would like to see me do my thing, following is a YouTube link to the TED Talk that I gave at Western Washington University when I was a faculty member there in 2017. The pitch was “Debunking Stock Investment Myths.”

I am a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA). I earned the former in 1996 and the latter in 2021 (yes, I am a lifelong learner). I serve on the board of the CFA Society SC. I am also licensed to sell insurance in SC (and with permission in other states.)
